Much of the cultural heritage of France is so pervasive it goes almost unnoticed. Obviously language marks out the French from other peoples but then so do many other factors. The French character is formed by factors such as enviroment, where they live (medieaval towns or cosmopolitan city), how they are schooled, their laws, things which go back centuries. The French kitchen, or cuisine, is a good example. The French take their food seriously. Most regions, and many towns, have one or more specialities, a cheese, a wine. Often these products are world famous, Champagne wine, Dijon mustard and Roquefort cheese to name but a few. It would take a good part of a lifetime to appreciate French culture to its fullest, perhaps more. So this page of links should be understood to be no more than a starting point.
